Old School Summer Playlist

Whenever the sunshine comes out all I want to do is whack on a fun playlist, get outside and make memories with my family and friends. Recently the weather in England has been particularly glorious, but typical British weather chats aside I realised that however much I wanted to put on a ‘sunny’ playlist & get outside, if I didn’t have the right playlist then that just wasn’t going to happen. I got to work and this Old School playlist was the result! When I put on songs like these, with such sunny lyrics, I just can’t help but feel super happy! What are your favourite summer songs?

As you may have realised by now, this is not what you might think of as a typical holiday/bbq playlist. It is far more mellow because that is my vibe for this time of year. I’m not so into the sort of summer playlists that seem to grace Spotify, you know the ones with heavy beats, and much prefer to  listen to songs with more of a nostalgic feel to them. I mean, why is it that when you watch old films it always seems to be super sunny? I think this continual bright feel that some of the best old films have is why I always associate this sort of soulful, storytelling song with the summer months of the year. And so, most of my playlists end up more boppin’ that raving, if you know what I mean! Vintage vibes for the win.
I adore all of the songs on this ‘blast from the past’ playlist, but there are a few that particularly stand out as my summer anthems, the first being ‘You’re All I Need To Get By’ sung by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrel. Some of my all time favourite songs are duets between men & women and this is no exception. It is such a fun song to sing along to (it would make a great choice for karaoke) and is so feel good that I can’t help but smile every time I hear it. If that doesn’t make a song an anthem, then honestly I don’t know what does!
Alongside my favourite duet, I have also been loving the classic rom-com hit ‘This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)’ by Natalie Cole. This song, and other variations of it, has been used in so many awesome films, including ‘A Cinderella Story’, ‘Bridget Jones 2’, ‘The Parent Trap’ and many others, and you can totally see why! It has such a loving, carefree feel and I’m sure will be used in many more great films in years to come. It is certainly the soundtrack to my summer.
There are so many other amazing throwback songs on this playlist, but we haven’t got all day – gotta get outside and enjoy the sunshine! I hope you enjoy listening to this slightly different playlist & that it gives you all the nostalgic summer feels you need to enjoy this week of sunshine!
Love Holly x
