After seeing many a pom pom adorned item in the shops over Christmas I decided I wanted my own pom pom cushion to spruce up my bed. I wanted it to match my other cushion from Next, pictured above, and for it not to be too pricey. After scouring the internet and having no luck finding a decent priced cushion of the right colour, I decided to make my own & here’s how you can make one just the same…
All you need to make you very own pom pom cushion is, surprise surprise, some pom poms and, wait for it, a cushion! I know it sounds self explanatory but by buying these items separately and sewing them together you can make the exact cushion that you want for a fraction of the price you would pay for one in the shops.
I got my cushion from Dunelm, who do a great range of different coloured value cushions, and it was under five pounds. This, alongside two packets of pom poms from Hobbycraft for one pound each, was all I needed to buy for this super easy DIY.
Now to put your cushion together you need to take the cushion pad out, so you are left with the outer skin, and then you can either sew or glue the pom poms on. I chose to sew them because I felt they would be more secure that way, but if you don’t have much time glueing is a great option.
You may want to mark, with a light pencil, where you want to put your pom poms before you start sewing. This way the pom poms will look neater and you can even lay them out in rows. Incase you can’t tell, I didn’t mark where I was going to put mine. Instead I just sewed them at random intervals and it seemed to come out fine, so don’t worry too much about this step.
If you choose to sew your pom poms on the most important thing to remember is that each pom pom has a solid middle. You need to start sewing from the inside and make sure that your needle goes up through the solid middle and also that it comes back through it. This will ensure that your pom poms will stay on and make sure you repeat this several times.
Now all you need to do is put your cushion inner back in, plump the cushion back into shape and there you have it, your very own pom pom cushion! I am really pleased with how my cushion came out and even though I sewed the pom poms on, instead of glueing them, it didn’t seem to take very long to make. That means this DIY is quick and easy, so why not give it a go?
